WMV (Windows Media Video) is a name for the set of video codec technologies developed by Microsoft.
WMV files use ASF container format. These files can be played by MPlayer or Windows Media Player.
The .wmv file extension usually describes ASF files using Windows Media Video codecs. The audio codec used with WMV is normally a version of WMA.
Besides ASF, WMV can be put into the AVI or MKV container formats as well.
Originally the WMV codec was designed for Internet streaming applications. Two other codecs – WMV Screen and WMV Image – are a screencast codec and a video slideshow codec respectively.

Xvid is a video codec library following the MPEG-4 standard. Xvid has MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile features such as b-frames, global and quarter pixel motion compensation, trellis quantization, lumi masking, and H.263, MPEG and custom quantization matrices.
Xvid is a primary competitor of DivX. While DivX is proprietary software, Xvid is open source software and, unlike DivX, can be used on many different platforms and operating systems.
